Vanilla-Cinnamon Roasted Almond Butter

Vanilla Cinnamon Roasted Almond Butter - Vegan and Gluten Free

Good Morning!

Today I am bringing you my Vanilla-Cinnamon Roasted Almond Butter. This recipe is so easy I couldn’t help but share it!

If you love almond butter but hate the hefty price tag, I recommend you try making your own.

I know what you’re thinking:

Jess, I’m not that ambitious. I’m not gonna do it.

That’s what I always thought too. But then after doing the math (which, let me say, I am not good at, so I don’t do this very often) I realized that 10 mins of my life every 2-3 weeks is worth a savings of $5.90 per jar.

How did I get this number you ask? Let me show you with my grade 3 math skills below:

1 bag of almonds from Costco is $19.39 for 1.36kg.  1.36kg x 1000 = 1360g/100g=13.60, $19.39/13.60= $1.43/100g

1 jar of almond butter (Nuts to You – Loblaws brand) is $10.99 for 356g. And 356g/100g=3.56, $10.99/3.56= $3.08/100g

So, to make the same 356g of almond butter yourself would cost you approximately: $1.43 x 3.56= $5.09

Therefore, if a 356g jar at the store costs $10.99, that’s a savings of $5.90!!! And that doesn’t even take into consideration that one bag of these almonds will make you approximately 3.8 jars of almond butter and thus, actually saving you a whopping $22.42 overall!!!

That’s almost $22.50 for every 4 jars. Even if you buy 1 jar/month that’s saving you $67.50/year!!

I could keep going with the math, but I think I’ll stop here… That was a slippery slope.

Having said all that I realize that there will likely be some grams lost when processing your own almond butter, but it’s still going to save you quite a bit of money – especially if you are addicted to almond butter like me 🙂

This also works for any nut and seed butters you’re buying (I won’t get into the math again), but just think about how much you are paying for jars of pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, peanut, and other butters. Now think about how much you could be saving when you add up all the cost savings by making your own? That $67.50/year could be doubled or even tripled!

Anyway, there’s my rant about making your own nut butter. I try to make my own whenever I can, but sometimes when I’m in a pinch I’ll bite the bullet and pay for the pre-made stuff. I’m human and sometimes humans just run out of almond butter and don’t feel like making it.

Finally, the Recipe!

I decided to add vanilla and cinnamon before I roasted the almonds to switch things up a bit. However, feel free to add your own flavourings. Or if you like to keep it simple, check out my original Roasted Almond Butter recipe.

If you ARE going to add flavouring however, (especially liquid ones) I strongly recommend you:

Roast the almonds AFTER coating them in the flavours and THEN process them!

The reason I recommend this is because I once had a terrible experience where I decided to add water to the almonds while I was processing them 😐 Let me tell you, it was a very expensive disaster. Oil and water DO NOT mix. Lesson learned. I hope you don’t make the same mistake – I warned you.

Ingredients
  1. 2 cups of raw, unsalted almonds
  2. 1-2 tsp of cinnamon
  3. 1-2 tsp of vanilla extract
  4. 1 tsp of ground sea salt
  5. Heavy duty food processor (I used an 8-cup Kitchenaid food processor)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 325F
  2. Spread almonds evenly onto baking sheet and roast in oven for 10-13 minutes, stirring at 5 minutes. Keep a close eye to make sure almonds are not starting to burn. They should smell fragrant and become a darker brown, but not black.
  3. Allow almonds to cool for 10 minutes before placing in food processor.
  4. Process almonds for approximately 8 mins, stopping to scrape down sides every minute or so.
  5. Once almonds have become a butter consistency, add the cinnamon, vanilla, and salt and process for 1 more minute.
  6. Pour butter into a glass jar and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
Notes
  1. Feel free to add more or less cinnamon, vanilla and/or salt to your preference.
